Go for it. I used leveling sand from home depot in my tank and its perfectly fine. Just rinse it off really well first. here's a pic of two of my gars chillin out on the bottom of the tank with the leveling sand.

I used "All natual pea gravel" from menard in my 125 and it did not affect the ph at all.

$235 for a bag of pea gravel? wow, nty. I paid $5 from a landscaping company for my washstone pea gravel. I got about 250lbs of it too.

probably $2.35 for a bag.

I use Amber Beach Gravel from Ace Hardware and after a very good rinse it works just fine, and a WHOLE lot cheaper than Fish Store Gravel.

Try just wetting the gravel first and listen for a "fiz", what you heard may have been just the gravel soaking up a bit of moisture, and not a reaction.

I have used granite pea gravel in tanks and it is just fine. Have a look at the gravel and if it is granite use it without worry.

Burt :)

there must be something in the pea pebbles that I got from Lowes causing my pH to raise. before I put the gravel in pH was at 7.4, few days after I put in the gravels it's now 8.0 :irked:
I'll see if I can find some other gravel to test.

thanks, I'll try to look for the granite pea gravel.
wetting the gravel doesn't make any sound but I do hear a "fiz" sound when I add vinegar. will try again tonight.
