Just curious if any one has ever used just regular Home Depot play sand or regular sand for substrate. I'm considering a new tank and the Home Depot stuff is like $3.00 for a 50 pound bag. I'm going to buy it sand is sand right?

Just wanted to know if anyone had tried it? Thanks, Rob

I went that route trying to build a tank, very bad idea. The sand had a very very hard time settling, and constantly clogged my filter. The pet stores around here sell river sand, and that seems to work much much better.

try pool filter sand

the stuff i got froma a hardware store worked great, havbnt had any problums and its super cheap, jsut make sure u clean it well befor u put it in mine stetled super quick and looks great. its darker too so stuff doesnt show up as easily as it dos on lighter sand.

I've used the Quickcrete brand Playsand and its worked ok in my tanks and looks pretty nice. It is pretty fine, kicks up pretty easily and I haven't had it that long so I don't know how much it'll affect my filters but it was like $4 for 40lbs. or something like that.

It was pretty clean also only took a couple rinses to get rid of debris and dirt.

Go to a hot tub or swimming pool retail store and buy a 50 lbs bag of Pool Filter Sand for $12 a bag. It's the cheapest way if you want to go with sand. It also looks very natural. I find that different stores carry different shades of sand. It's made for human contact so it's already pretty clean. I'd still wash it really good. Turn off your filters when adding the sand.

pool filter sand is great, not too dirty, and will look nice. you can use sand blasting sand as well from a masonry yard if you had one close.

if you have fish like stingrays that have a very sensitive underside, it can cause problems since it can be jagged. most other fish, it will be great for.

I used the play sand from home depot in my 14 gallon. It works great except the only bad thing is it is super dirty and takes for ever to clean it.
