home made canister..lets see if it workks tommarow

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
type of pumps are you useing
Me too???
Flow rate would make the world of difference when it comes to any distortion(leakage)of the bucket.
Was thinking of something similer..1 1/2"syphon line into bucket top, spraybar over filter floss, then sponge, last would be scrubbies..kinda like an eheim classic..output, 3/4" pipe to appx. 500gph pump..thinking large water amount sitting against low volume pump would equal not starving the pump or distorting the bucket.
I also think this would be a real chore to clean when stacked up to any benefit this system would give you, which is why I shelved mine..
Looking forward to how this works for you..might have to pull the components back off of the shelf.:D

Your over thinking. Your not going to "starve" the pump if you use teh correct sized line. Infact, if you use a line very large for the suction side of the canister, more water will enter the canister than can be pumped out, this will cause a massive amount of head pressure. Where as if you use a line of the correct size or smaller, the bucket may see less positive pressure and may not leak while its running.

Either way, your setting your self up for a disaster. I keep telling everyone, building your own large canister filter is not as easy or as quick as everyone thinks. 99% of the time, they give up because it leaks.

Look for my 6 Gallon Bucket Canister thread.... You will find some goof info in there.

There IS a reason for all those screw clamps on the Fx5 and Classic Series filters.

im testing it tommarow....also i was going to use a mason jar but couldnt find a big plastic one that i could drill....that would of worked perfect any one know were i could get one ¿¿¿

Not a bad idea, sayz I to me..why reinvent a wheel that won`t turn..Cut&paste in the search box.
1 green bar...go get the paper, 2 green bar...scan the news(get pissed, mental note:stop reading the news)...Screen saver kicked on, jiggle the mouse, Hmmmm, still 2 green bar...Go make breakfast...Insert mouse jiggle, 3 green bar...Eat breakfast while watching local news(get pissed, mental note:only watch the weather channel)...Another jiggle, 3 green bar..Look at the clock, gotta make lunch for work...Whip up a couple killer hoages and a handful of chips...Jiggle, 3 green bars...Check the clock, go take shower and get ready for work...Jiggle, 4 green bars...
Give up and head out(mental note:stop getting so pissed)

okay so i ran it about an hour ago and the top keeps leaking so i took the top off and am using it now as a sump..kinda i geuss. if i were to leave it this way is it easier?¿ many people tell me they are easier to clean....idk what im going to do yet its going to b a slow project for maybe two 55g or maybe even to 90g, if i add an additional pump for its own separate intake for the water..idk

OK, thanx..got to page 10 of 10 and:confused:

Bummer:(
Did the top leak with nothing but static water pressure??pump not running???Then start to leak when the pump started??
Were you reading the correct thread? Because I never said that. I havn't even put it to the test yet. With the Economy I had to put it on hold for a long while. I may be able to start up again soon. I have to be a new cover because I melted the first one. haha.

Maybe you read somewhere that I thought it "might" or "could" leak with the head pressure?

it started leakin from the lid not the bottom and when i turned the pump on it stated to leak.but yeah a sump is what i am going to do...most likely, going to try a couple more things if it doesnt work then im going with a sump

Were you reading the correct thread
Sorry for any confusion..2 quotes, asking 2 questions..from 2 different people.
I asked about when the leak started..I put a small fluid bed filter together awhile back out of a small pump(95gph) and a container(some kind of food storage, lid locks,o-ring,plastic)..no leaks:Dhooked it inline with a canister and whoosh:(more flow/pressure than the lid could hold..other things came up and shelved the thing..Pretty sure, with valving and various sand amounts/densities, it would have done OK.
At the time, getting it working was more trouble than it would have been worth.
Also, this was pushing the water thru the container. Never reversed the flow, pulling water..
1.Didn`t want sand in the pump while "dialing"it in.
2.Didn`t think of it at the time:irked:
Might just pull that bad boy off the shelf and mess with it, connected to my DIY powered gravel vac(not as a fbf)but just to see if it would leak hooked on the suction side.
