with hole already made!

washed the living crud out of the sponges

i didn't have any glue or any nifty contraption to hold the hosing in the tubes so i sewed them together with fishing string at the end ..like this

than stuck it all together!!

its been up for 4 days now....heavily seeded with both my other tank filters..its in a 5 gallon going to be used for a few select guppy grow out and a ghost shrimp holding tank.....think this will work?^_^ any impute would be great.........oh yeah they float so....rocks for now!

bump...

so does anyone think this will work? i wasn't sure on how big the sponges need to be vs gallons..? iv only used sponge filters once before for a short time

I'd put stones inside the sponges and see if they weigh enough. Looks effective , but you should probably maximize the area of used sponge by perforating the hose that's against the sponge inside. Then it's pulling water in all the way up instead of just at the bottom.

BTW, GENIUS!!!

I am going to do this, thank you! I have seen sponges that size quote large enough for a 75 gallon tank. That's what they claimed anyway. I agree with knifegill, drill lots of holes for the tubing that is INSIDE the sponge and it should double the intake.

awesome! you guys rock im going to pull it out and stab a bunch of holes in the tube untill i can go pick up a few stones ^_^ thanks for the impute

and that size for a 75? hmm i was thinking it looked about right for 5 gallons lol

look at aquabid.com and look at the sponge filters for reference. Great job though.

Another factor to consider is the pore size. If that yellow sponge has smaller pores than a manufactured sponge filter, it will house more bacteria but clog faster. This would imply reduced filtration capacity if minimally maintained but really increased capacity if dunked and brushed off every week.
