Home water softener ok?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I change about 300 gallons every 5 days.

I have a RO but it's an under sink unit. Only has 3 gallons of storage in the tank.

Does the ro deplete even more minerals than softener? Would I need to add them back in if using RO?

Calgary if the softener malfunctions the tds will go way up right? I'll establish a baseline tds and test every time. That way I can tell if it malfunctions until I get another RO. How big of an RO would I need to do 3-400 gallons? Or massive storage tank? I think my current one does like 25 a day!?

If you are doing 300 gallons every five days, you'll want a large storage tank and a unit that can produce a 60-70 gallons a day. That will fill a 300 gallon vat for you in the time you'll need it, but the unit will be running almost all the time. The other option you have is get a larger unit that fills 100+ gallons a day, so you don't have to run it all the time.

I had this problem. I used to do one 4 hour water change a day and temp dropped too low. So now i split it and do two seperate 2 hour water changes, one in the morning and one late afternoon. Works for me. I have a drip system but open fully so more of a fast flow than a drip.

I'll break it into two smaller ones for now. Do you think it's ok to do the softener still for another month or two until I get a larger RO? Or go back to tap?

You just change the membrane on the ro unit. You can get what ever rating 5-200 gallon per day. You just need the restrictor that goes along with the membrane.
