Homeless sting ray?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wile I was at work on a medical aid and noticed one of my patients had a fresh water sting ray in a 30gal tank. My patient doesn't have long to live and he mention to me if I happen to know any body who knew how to take care of the ray. I offered to take care of it if he was to pass away and he agreed to letting me have it. my question is I know fresh water rays are illegal in California but is there any way to get a permit from the dept. of fish and game to keep it?
And is there a process to become a animal shelter for abandoned, difficult to care for / specialized pets?

Hi, welcome to Monster Fish Keepers. You will have better luck finding an owner for this fish in the MFK Market Place and your respective region. You could also try posting in the stingray section!

Welcome to the site.
No way they'll give you a permit to take it. Best bet is to get in contact with them and explain the situation. They may let you give it to someone out of state without paying the fines since you are making an effort to move it somewhere legal.

Try donating it to the Academy of Science, they have a freshwater stingray tank.

30g? What kind of ray is it?

I am pretty sure that any illegal fish are instantly euthanized. I'd try to find somebody out of state to take it.

Cali will not give permits for rays. You know how Cali is, they have there ways...
If you are willing to ship it to my local dealer, I will pay the shipping cost and take care of it well. I have 9 rays and have room in one of my 250 tanks to put it in. Do you know if its a male or female... can you snap a picture and let us see it so we can know what it is. thanks
Let me know.. sorry about the permit, but thats Cali.
But there are plenty of people on here that will help take care of it. Let me know if you want to ship to my dealer and we will go from there...

By the time I went back to try to get the sting ray the electrical company had turned off the guys electrical service to his single wide and all of his tanks had turned. Needless to say the guys trailer stunk like a bad fish market and I couldn't save the ray or anything else.
