If youre relying on BB in the water, then youre severly under filtered. Every article ive ever read recommends placing the UV light AFTER the filter, and this is why:

I have the U/V after my canister:D then straight to the tank.

Well, welcome to mfk and nice native in your avatar its beautiful.

Same here.

Welcome SebSkie, nice Green Sunfish

Very nice DIY filter. Once I get into larger tanks, I'll probably do all DIYs to save myself some money

I read a few articles that said BB prefer to be free swimming and are only attached when under stress, such as in an aquarium filter. If anyone wants I can link them to the study that I was reading.

Sure. If you find the link, please post it. I'll give a critical review.

It has been long understood to be the opposite, so I am very interested to know what (& how) they found what they did.

if that was case, we would all be wiping out our BB with the big water changes most people do. i guess im not convinced yet...

Hello, I'm sorta new to all this, but in the process of reasearching filtration for my 220g. I have 3 canisters, but would like to setup a cheap sump as well. UV sterilization would also be a plus. I have a container like that in my garage. Would I just need a pump, a sterilizer, and some tubing?

Could anyone recommend what a good flow rate should be for a 220g? Larry, do you know the flow rate of your setup?

I too am interested int he floating bacteria issue, (there are some free-floating bacteria just not what we are used to talking about).

Flow rate depends on UV unit's specs.

Dr Joe
