Hey guys I have been making my own food for a couple of months now and because the lack of gelatin in my mixture the food gets everywhere and its really hard for them to eat it if they dont take it right away. My question is how much gelatin is too much and are there any ill effects if you do use too much. I ended up with a gallon bag full about 1/2" thick per layer. I used about 3/4 of a pack of gelatin. Is that too much?

how are you making the food

i used 4 packs of gelatin in mine, no fish have died sense i started, grew a bit tho

I take fresh market shrimp raw no shells, hikari cichlid gold, some brand of veggie flakes, krill and plankton. I try to keep the ratio about 60/40 meat vs. veggie because I am feeding dovii. Blend it all up then spread onto a small sheet of eggcrate that sits on top of parchment paper and put in a gallon sized bag. When I go to feed I just take my thumb and pop out however many squares I need, thaw and feed.

gelitin is ok as long as your fish will still take the food
think of it as connective tissue
its not bad for them like fat but its not good for them either and will fill their stomachs

You're using gelatin so I assume you've been at the link above as well as this one:http://thegab.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=3

I usually use just one package of gelatin, and yes it goes all over after they tear into it. But the fish chase down the stuff and do a great cleanup job. I like using as little gelatin as possible.

i never read a froum before i did it just did it to hold the food together so it didnt cloud the water
i wonder if you could make a dough though?

I make and use what I call formula 4 (for obvious reasons.) Anyway I toss thawed market shrimp with the tails pulled off along with whole smelt and a handful of peas along with a dash of paprika into a food processor....chop until it's well blended. NOTE; this is only for the small fish...the others get a mix of the same foods but whole.

Once I have a mash of sorts out of it I take it and spoon it into several party ice cube trays I found that duplicate the comercial frozen food size blocks and then freeze the mixture over night. I never use and binding agents...the fish love it. I just toss in a couple pof frozen cubes and watch them pull them appart as they thaw. Originally I used tuna and catfish nuggets in the mix but the added oils really made a mess out of the water and a lot of the fish didn't care for it.

This new mix is eaten eagerly by ALL of the small guys except for the fry of course. Costs me about a dollar a pound and an hour or so per batch.
