Ive been doing some research and have decided to build a Wood Fired Hot Tub and go Chemical free japanese style to keep operating costs down. Ive got a plan for the build and wood stove but im stuck on how to seal it. Im going to build it from standard or marine grade lumber but im not sure if I should go with a liner...or some sort of paint on sealer. The sealer would look much better as there wouldnt be any folds.

FYI: japanese style means no chemicals so you just fill it use it for a few days and then drain it. I plan to only use it a few weekends a month SO it doesnt sit full of water ALL THE TIME so that makes me think some paint on sealer may work very well.

Here is a quick sketch

What would you all recommend?

I will also keep you all updated on the build as it goes

No one has any advice?

I think your idea is cool. I have been thinking of something like this for a while. The only change in mine, I want to use a smoker for the fire box so I can also do some BBQ at the same time. I saw one for sale a while ago. cost was around 3 grand. I can build it for about $700.
Good luck, keep us updated.

I've been tossing this idea around for a while myself. I was going to go with pond Armour but not sure what is the max temp for it. Black rubber pond liners get soft even at reasonable temps. I doubt the would stand up to the heat involved.

I looked into pond armor and the heat should be fine but its expensive stuff! Would fiberglass be cheaper? Or some other generic sealer since its only to be filled once in awhile and if it leaks its outside anyway. Im really sticking to a low budget on this so let me know if you guys have any ideas or suggestions.

What about a bathtub?

I'm in no way handy so I can't give advice, but would really like say that I think its an awesome idea!

just a thought (and like I said I can't build for my life...) but what about a concrete outside and then you just cover it in tiles? You could have a square frame and build in seats...

don't know if thats possible but I've seen something like that once at a hotel...

thats a great idea except im a renter so cement is a little to permanent. And I plan to move next fall so something portable would be nice

and Rmorse also a good idea but im looking to build it as a 4 person hot tub

would it be cheaper to just cover it with some sort of sealer or just fiberglass the whole thing
