In the air and I ain't comin down!
How much filtration would you need for 2x 18'' + fish for a year being housed in a 180g? One of the fish being a Clown Knife and the other a Peacock Bass? What type filter Hob's/Canister/ and I know sumps are the ideal filter but these aren't an option right now.

i would do a combination of hob and a canister

FX5

I would do 2 HOB and 2 canisters or fx5.

Thank you all I apriciate your response. I see the general advice would be FX5's or large HOB. Ok so let me explain why I asked this question. This was a guestion possed to me at one of my LFS since they know I keep cichla. Another customer brought an 18'' peacock bass and it died overnight. The salesman at the LFS approched me with the queston of what happen? And what could he do to prevent this from happining again if he tried to do this again? I assesed his problem as WAY to little of filtration. He was running power heads to an undergravel filter. I know this is a big no no and was probably the original reason for the ammonia spike. So I went in today to the LFS and the gentelman was there. He showed me before and after pictures and it was obvious ammonia burn. I told him to use 2x 400 hob and an FX5 canister full of bio rings and the blue filter floss as well as the white polisher filter next time around. Normally I advise people not to try and keep peacock bass but I seen that this guy was going to be determined so I tried to put him on the right path. He asked me if had 1 HOB and ran Carbon in this one and the other hob (which he had already) would be ok with more bio? I told him yes with what he had it could work. His list is as follow's -- 330 hob/400 hob (which I told him to buy) and a canister that has a leak in it and needs to get a new seal which he needs to fix before he can use. I also advised him to get an FX5 in addition and fill it the way I listed above.

I know there are a few MFK who run a large group in a 180g but I just didin't know how they were getting bye doing this.

FX5 but my biggest question is why can't you have a sump?

Of course I told him this would be the way I would do it, and this is the way I currently get away with it. I wouldn't even bother trying to keep cichla with out a sump or a bio tower.

High flow canister and a couple powerheads.

High flow? Meaning FX5's? Excuse my ignorance I never used canister's before.

Fx5 would be the best and smart addition to a 180g with large fish in it..

Cool thanks I wasn't sure how to get away with a fish that size in a tank that small with no sump. I also wanted to be sure I told him correctly and that I actually retained all or most of the info I read on here daily. ;) Didn't want to be giving him bad advice.:grinno:
