Hopefully they'll stay pure. By far the best looking jag in my opinion. I'd like a pictorial guide on all the jag location varients.

That would be awesome, Michael. Same for all of the Hericthys location varients.

Here's what Felipe has on his site to show the different Gymnogeophagus varients across Uruguay: http://www.aqvaterra.com/map_rhabdotus.php

Not perfect but really brings things from abstract to reality (for me at least)...

"Pure" strains stay "pure" through breeding only fish with provenance back to a particular collection location. Not "I saw this jag in a LFS and it has some blue so it's a Honduran Jag"... or "I think that's what the guy at the auction told me", etc.

I agree with the comments regarding the value of F2, F3, F4, etc. fish. For whatever reason, people have it in their minds that any fish that are anything but wild or F1 wild are inbred crap. If people are culling weak and deformed fish, it takes many generations of inbreeding before congenital abnormalities become a problem.

As an example, as Felipe's map above shows, just about every small pond in Uruguay has a "different" substrate spawning Gynogeo, mouthbrooding Gymnogeo and chanchito (Australoheros). The fish become "different" probably through isolation from other populations...and probably originally were introduced during a 100-year type flood situation when a larger body of water crested its banks and then receded...leaving a population of fish in a pond to evolve specifically to that pond (in isolation). While I'm sure it happens (and those fish are predated or die), this isolated group of fish I'm sure is a heck of a lot more "inbred" than a couple of generations. Lot's of genetic abnormalities? Nope.

Dog, regarding your comments about wild vs. F1+...... We often forget to touch on the mass hysteria created by vendors (and certain "friends" or "employees" of "certain" vendors) over wild fish in an effort to drive up pricing of wild (or "maybe wild") fish. MORE influential, though, is the impact of people here and elsewhere who want to be able to buy a degree of fishy glory, the reflection of which they enjoy basking in!

I hope my use of "air quotes" carried the implication I intended it to! ; )

I fully "understand" and agree with you. Some people are just so Ichthyologically gangsta though! forreealz homie.

lol. I like f0s. Many times I can see the difference. Larger more pronounced eyes mouth and teeth. But even their behavior can be different as well. I have a pair of regani that attack pellets at the top of the tank like crazy while my tank bred regani are much more calm.
On the down side, most of my wild caughts tend to hide as soon as I step in the room even though Ive had them for years now. They are also prone to diseases unlike my tank bred fish that never get sick. My tank bred fish also mature at a smaller size and tend to have more color. what a trade off.

Sorry for the derail. Go Hondo Jags!

My comment was because some folks have said they would not keep anything less than an F1 and have even downplayed other people's fish if they were F2 or lower.

I meant nothing in that comment to you.

Pics of your Honduran Jaguars are what got me into Parachromis and monster fish in general.

I would love the opportunity to own an f1 or f2 to raise as a solo wet pet, with the possibility of finding a mate down the line.

I guess at what, 90 gallons, (48" long, 18" f-b, 24" tall) would be minimum for a solo male. That's not too crazy. I will be avidly searching these out in a few months once I've assembled the equipment.

Thanks Scott. I have six Managuense in total. That's more of them than any other fish save maybe Convicts and Labridens.

I don't think I've ever seen you post a picture of a convict. Even if you're just breeding them as feeders, you're still probably breeding an f0 pair from some random collection point that look way more awesome than any convicts I've seen.

Care to expand upon your convict collection, perhaps in another thread?

I do have a bunch of Convicts in various tanks as dithers and target fish. The wild that I have are from "Rio Mongo". I just saw a pair breeding in one of the large tanks last night and took a photo...but they are out of reach of the flash. I have posted pictures in the past.

Here's two more of the male Hondo Manny.

That is a stunning fish. Am I right in that a 90 gallon (48" long, 18" f-b, 24" tall) tank would be sufficient for one?

I'm going to have to go searching for your convict pics now.
