Let a little algae grow on the rocks or pots in your tank. The fry will graze on that, then start with some crushed flake or pellets. I have a bunch of dovi fry now and they grazed the first few days after they started free swimming.

You can also take whatever pellet you are using now and grind it to powder in an electric coffee bean grinder.

I also have a few different fry foods that I use. Got them from Ken's Fish Food while he was at the convention. Great stuff. Excellent hang time in the water for the fry.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll try the crushed pellets, crushed flakes and crushed brine shrimp once they become free swimming. Also my male colors faded a ton since the fry...he looks like he does when he is stressed out..such as when I do tank cleaning. He looks very similar to the female...look back to page 14 to get a good idea of what I am talking about...do you all experience the same thing. I know they color up for spawning...but I have never seen him that faded for a long time.

The F0 pair are breeding again. I had the tank divided with a complete divider for a few weeks. I do this on occasion if I am leaving on a trip or some other reason that I can't keep a close eye on the pair. Occasionally I will divide them simply so they can mend any small tears in their fins or scales from breeding behavior. So they get to look but not touch for a few weeks. The pair generally will hang close to the divider with only minor attention to each other. Before I remove the divider I do a 90% water change. Without fail they will begin breeding.

The process starts off with a little flashing and lip locking. Generally it's the female that initiates the process.

Flaring from the other side...kind of an unusual angle:

Here's the pair side by side flashing each other:

Lots of acrobatics as the female trys to entice the male into breeding:

I purposely placed some silk plants across their usual breeding area. Job number one for the male was to do some MAJOR excavation to remove the plants. You can't see him...he;s in the plants here..but you can see the debris he kicked up off the bottom moving the plants and rock. Their usual breeding area is a flat piece of shale.

I watched the lip locking for a solid hour. The male can easily put his entire mouth around the open mouth of the female. So it's all a matter of timing. The pair squares off with each making a move forward to try grab the other. The majority of the time the male will grab and release. Whenever the female grabs his upper lip, she just hangs on.
