I just picked up a pair of these a few days ago from a local. They look great. After doing some research online, I am finding a gap in information regarding breeding. Many sites say it just happens but they don't specify water temperatures, parameters, pH, hardness, etc. Maybe I'm looking to far into it and they will spawn in just about any healthy parameters?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I figured as much, just wanted to get a few other opinions. Thanks. The guy I bought the breeding pair from said you have to have no more then 100-150ppm of hardness in the water, but I cannot find anywhere else that says that is a requirement for a successful spawn.

I have a breeding pair of HRP. They are breeding on a regular basis. I got them small and grew them up in a large tank without other cichlids. They were subadults so I was able to pick out a pair. In a large tank, there is a lower chance of them killing each other. They eventually paired off and started breeding like rabbits. I don't know what is the water parameter. I just feed them everyday and change water every week. The temperature is about 79-80 degrees. Good Luck.

Thanks, sounds like its easier then I am making it :) I'm guessing Hardness must not be as much of a key as the seller said it was.

Yup, I've got a couple of pairs as well. I keep the water right around 80, and the water is just slightly acidic (since I have some driftwood in there and it lowers it just a tad). To be honest, I don't even know my hardness but they breed in overturned clay pots pretty frequently. I have 2 pair in a 55 that have taken over opposite sides of the aquarium. The big difference between the convicts and HRPs is the breed size - convicts have huge clutches of around 200 eggs (I think?) while HRPs usually around 30 eggs. Good luck, but to be honest you basically just need to put them in the tank and they will make sweet fish love.

New question:

I have a 38 Gallon tank. Currently it has some awesome looking Rainbow Cichlids, which are shy and boring me to death. How many HRP's could/should I keep in there, including at least one breeding pair.

I'm unfamiliar with there aggression levels.
