Wow awesome colors....so do you guys think I will be ok with a 2 to 2.5 inch hep with an 6inch bumblebee oscar 3 inch yellow acara

It depends on tank size, but they should be fine. I would grow the HRP out a little before adding it, because of the Oscar. HRPs seem to grow relatively fast.

Its a 6ft 150 I would really like to avoid having multiple tanks running right now.

I agree the males have better color in the fins, but both have very nice color if you are into blue fish. If you are looking for bright reds and yellows its not really there with the HRP.

The Oscar is the only thing that concerns me. I have mine in the Texas Cichlids and they do fine. The HRPs are big bodied fish and the Texas have small mouths so they couldn't gulp them down like the oscars can. I would suggest growing them out a bit. You do have a large tank so you could divide the tank for a few months giving the HRPs time to grow. I have found they grow fairly quickly. you should be fine in 2 months.

Not to derail the thread but those of you that have breed HRPs how hard is the male on female? I ordered mine online and wound up with 5 males and 1 Female. Just my luck. I am a little concerned for the little girl but so far no aggression.

OP I hope you don't mind me asking I think it might be inline with your original question.

I had zero m/f aggression with my pair in a 75gal community, but I only got three spawns before the male jumped out, while defending fry and I lost him. If other fish are in the tank, they get all the aggression IME.

I had 3 pairs w/ in a 150g w/ other larger cichlids. They eventually got too aggressive for the much larger CA cichlids, but if I had all males they would have been fine.

IME they aren't bad on mates like some other cichlids. You won't have to separate. I've bred them in the 150g and 25g and no difference.

Everything I read suggests ibqould be ok with just 1. But I noticed most of you keep them in pairs...am I ok with 1 male

Guys should I get a male or a female ? Not getting a pair have no interest in breading them. He will go in a 30 gal with a yellow acara and clown loach until the 150 is up and running (next couple of weeks)

You would be ok with just one male. You may have a hard time telling male from female at small sizes. I have 6 together and I really enjoy the interaction with each other.
