I'm going to be lazy and ask...
What is the difference between hrp and convicts? They look identical to me.

HRP are cousins to the convict they look very similar except there bodies are a little longer and less deep. They also max out at 5" where a con will max out at 6" They also don't get the big bubble on their heads which I hate. I know allot of people love the kochs but it is just not for me. They also are less aggressive than the convict and don't breed as often or lay as many eggs.

As far as colors go. Pics do look very similar but in person it is very easy to tell the difference. Besides the body shape mentioned before. They are blue with blue stripes instead of black with black stripes. They also have a metallic blue sheen on them. They have more color in the tails and fins and don't have the orange bellies (actually the females have a little orange). Many people have mixed HRP's and cons and most HRP's sold in LFS today are mixes. If you see HRP with black stripes they are mixed with convicts and allot of time go by the name blue convict.

The luecistic are often confused with pink convicts in pictures but in person you will see they have no pink and are a pearly white with brighter white stripes.

Hope that helps.

These pics show the metallic sheen better than my camera does. These aren't my fish they are from google image. I also these pics also really show the difference between HRP and Cons.

This pic is actually a convict it is a very colorful female. Compare this to my pics along with the description I just gave and you will be able to see the difference.

Agree. This is just a regular female Con.

"Convicts" are actually four different species now (with HRPs from Rio Danli being a 5th, un-described species).

Just about every stream or body of water in Central America has a different "convict" (Some are A. siquia, some are A. nigrofasciata, some are A. coatepeque and Some are A. kanna).

More important than species, in my opinion, at least is collection location (or origin). Most of the "cons" from LFS or otherwise without provenance are most likely technically hybrids. Or at least crosses from different locations. Like Aulonacara (Peacocks) from Lake Malawi, the fish from different locations might be the same species but the location variants are quite different (or a little different).

Anyway, I keep about a dozen different wild-type convict variants in my fishroom (including the HRP from Rio Danli, Honduras). All are different and endlessly entertaining fish!

Would love to see some pics of your wild cons! Do you have them posted on here anywhere? I saw a video from The Rick on you tube and his wild cons looked purple they are pretty cool.

Edit - I just went through your old posts and saw some pics very nice. One of your HRP's I believe it was the f2 rio Mongo looked leucistic from the pic. Is it?
