The only way to avoid hybrids is to buy from a trusted source, with provenance back to the wild. (and a specific collection point)

Hybrids will always be an ongoing issue in this hobby. In fact, IME, it has only gotten worse over the last 25 yrs.

Right, And that’s unfortunate. It basically leaves the internet as the only choice to buy fish for anybody who wants a pure strain fish. I know in my area, none of my lfs’s advertise collection points. And I only know of one guy who breeds from pure strains.

Do you see the hobby ever being able to correct this hybrid problem? Or is everything so readily available to the common hobbyist that it will only get worse? It seems that the number of people who don’t really care about this effect far outweigh the ones that do.
I too actually believe its getting worse.
Before the hybridizing was just out of ignorance and non-realization that certain species were different. Today, the fad seems to be that Joe Blow down the street can create better fish than nature, so make random hybrid mutts, and mutants on purpose, and give them cartoonish names.

Not just the internet, but for many probably the only way to ensure quality stock. Some LFS still import from trusted vendors, and of course that still leaves local clubs, and breeders, but the reality is that the average consumer doesn't care about collection points etc.

I have seen HRP's recently in San Francisco..............They were labeled next to a separate tank selling convicts.................Your female is definitely more "convict" than HRP because it is albino...............
