Honest question, odd story

A Black Ghost Knife would be AWESOME for that, but you might need a bit larger tank down the road. That's a really cool idea though.

Would a g.tile, dragon goby, or freshwater lion fish work in this environment? Perhaps some sort of wolf fish?

turquoise severum. that's about how I kept mine. no plants though, just the wood.

Severums are cool, but not quite the oddball I'm looking to keep in blackwater. I've been doing some research, and unfortunately, all the good oddballs I'm finding are brackish. Even with the added salt, I think the peat I'd use for blackwater would acidify the water too much for a brackish fish/eel.

I actually have a brown knife in a 125 right now that is about to be moved to a 30g tank. Not a bad idea, though.

Why not use real drift wood to help you in your process?

You could always add the leaf and almond extract if the tannins started to fade or it wasn't dark enough.

If you worried about waiting for it to water log, you could always just get Malaysian drift wood, it sinks right away.

As far as fish, not sure for the mid a bottom level swimmers but how about an African butterfly fish.
