Not being stupid or anything but what kind of knot were you using?

I use the original clinch knot, but this one will work just fine for you-

When tightening the knot pull on all three points (line coming out the rod, line attached to lure, and end of line). I usually put the end of the line in my mouth to tighten. This knot can be done in 10 seconds easy once you get used to it.

That's the knot I use

Palomar knot is very famous for it's great and quick knot. But there are better and stronger knots out there.

Often with a palomar knot, the line will break before the knot...I'm not sure how much stronger than that you can get? And even if you could, why would you need a knot stronger than your main line?

I use the Palomar from 2lb mono to 100lb braid. It's easy, fast and can do it in the dark with no problems. The loop is easily adjusted for longer lures. I remember it used to be the strongest freshwater knot and second in salt but since then so many different types of knots have came out, not sure what it is but whatever it is, I cant recall it ever failing me. I remember watching Bill Dance or Hank Parker testing lines way back when, the palomar knot was the strongest, some knots came un-done, cut into themseleves, etc. I know a lot people tie the other knots just to be cool because they are more complicated but in the end, if the fish is in your hands, thats all that really matters. Now the palomar is not a 100% universal knot, I mean it is but say with like some lures, they wont swim correctly unless the lure is free from the knot, this is when the Rapala knot comes to play. More complicated but the lure is free and not bound at the knot.

Some knots dont work well with braid either, they tend to slip out but the palomar does work for me.

A lot of people tend to pull the main line when making a palomar which is a big no no. When you do this is weekens the line, flattens it and makes it look curly. Always always always pull the tag end and leave just a bit of tag at the end of the knot just in case you didnt pull it tight and so you have extra line so when you are fighting fish or snagged as it get tighter it can use some of that tag.
