Biggest trick for guppies- some hardness. Whether it's calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, simple pure sodium chloride or minerals from hard rock, a little hardness in their water goes a long way for color and spunk. I use a tablespoon of marine salt per ten gallons and the results compared to pure fresh are amazing. But I also live in western washington, and our tap is automatically amazon soft. So if your tap in hawaii is hard, you're probably going to have great results without really trying.

Floating plants for fry to hide from mom. She'll try to eat them. Keep a good amount of algae and random pond micro-critters going for good fry survival. Occasional live food also puts a hurt on the ugly.

yea definitely stop fighting because they CAN AND WILL ban you. its not worth it especially over guppies. and also (just saying) if anyone tries the whole i know everything because im the greatest crap, you will be shut down real quick. this site is all about first hand experiences and advice. not to bicker over guppies water quality. and many many many MANY people on here are going to know way more than you could ever learn in years of fish keeping.

ok back to the original post. i did this and i myself find it easier with cichlids anymore. but guppies are good feeders. i would suggest to start off just go pick a few pregnant guppies up from your local fish store, and let them start goin. in my experience if you buy males with females even the 1 to 3 ratio when first starting off the pregnant gups will have miscarriages and not deliver the fry at first because of the stress. most all female guppies are pregnant by the time they reach 3/4 of an inch if mixed with males but look for large bellies with black spot by the tail fin. its called the gravid spot. the larger and darker it is the sooner you will have babies. also the larger he female is the more babies usually. get a floating breeder tank or net to go in the tank and put the fry in it to grow a bit. if you just let them go most of the babies will be fish food, but to your other guppies. if your feeding with them best thing to do is let them be separated to have the most stock. it takes some time for them to grow and while they are little they are snacks for anything in the tank. i even see my ghost shrimp grabbing babies as they swim by and eating them. just stick to mfk and you will get it right. this site is the BEST.

Guppies and swordtails in my opinion are the easiest to breed, they are livebearers so they dont lay eggs, and when i used to have these fish they would always breed, i didnt even have to try, lol. one of the reasons i got rid of guppies and swordtails from my tanks are because they kept breeding so much, they were begining to dominate my tank, lol, i had too many of them in the end and the tank became over populated. good luck though. im sure you will succeed in breeding
