I was sitting down enjoying the Mizzo game and pop! 2008 just started off real bad. Out of know ware my 220 gl reef tank that I was just starting cracked. You wouldn't think 3/4 glass would do that without a cause. How could this happened nothing hit the glass in or outside of the aquarium. Now I have $900 of live rock siting in barrels and the fish in a 90 gl sump. Can I replace the glass or is it best to just buy a new tank?:nilly:

Oooh thats rough. It can be replaced but its feasibility depends on your skill level and resources at your disposal.

Wow it makes you not want to get a 200 gallon tank period. How many 200 gallons have busted in the past few months,on MFK?

Remember the frontosa colony acryic 300 or so gallon? Sucks. I know its possible to fix it, but it probably won't look the same. Aren't there guarantees on fish tanks from this sort of stuff?

I'm very curious. You say you were just starting the tank? How far along?
What do you think may caused the crack?

I was 3 months into it and I haven't the slightest on what caused it to crack I'm baffled. I didn't even hit the side when I was putting the live rock in. I think I'm going to attempt to fix it. If that doesn't work the back piece of glass may come in handy for a plywood tank down the line.

i think you should just DIY plywood tank...but i think glass may not just be the only option for the from of the tank....you could just get a plexiglass which is tough...like you throw a ball at it...it wont break like your glass.Plus making yourself a newer tank is cheaper in my opinion than buying a new tank from the LFS....but if you try too hard on it..it will sooner or later cost you the same for a new tank.Just have 5 flat pieces of plywood and put it together and have its screwed down and siliconed on all sides of the tank and have a epoxy residue as a coating on top of the plywood interior...but have 3 coatings to make sure its water typed....and tight enough that it doesnt have any holes that water can leak out of it...
