I have an empty 55gal tank laying around. I'm pretty sure it's 48x13x20.

Is this big enough for me to get a single FH? How about a pair? I'd like to start with just the single and then get them a mate in the future.. but I've never had a FH before. I've been doing some research and also talking to the store owner nearby who sells strictly FH, koi and other asian fish.

I thought I would ask you experienced FH owners, as I trust you guys more than ANY salesman.

Also what sort of decor would I need. The tank already has natural gravel mixed with some old neon/colored gravel. I was just going to clean it up and use that since I read FH like a more colorful tank. Would providing shelter and plants be necessary? I plan on raising the fish up from a juvenile.

The 55g tank is just ideal for a single flowerhorn.. if you wanted to breed fh, then I suggest getting another tank in case the male & female don't get along..
Your old tank setup is good to go as well.. if you only keep a single fh, then shelter & plants aren't necessary but should look nice as decorations..
I basically prefer a bare, clean looking tank which is easier for weekly maintenance.. :)

Thanks so much. I've seen people with flower pots, etc as shelter in the FH tanks. I wasn't sure if maybe they preferred a hideout as a juvie or not.

I'm very excited to get my first FH!

colorful gravel can make them stressed and more aggressive. like there ca cichlid ancestors they prefer natural color.

I didn't know that. Most of the gravel is natural colored.. so I think it will be fine. There are just a couple colored rocks here and there. I have to clean it so when I do I can take some out if I think it's too crazy looking.

Anyone have a good idea on what a good price for a juvi is? LFS around here sells juveniles for $14.99 but they don't say what type they are.

Found another store who breeds FH but they will only bring them in from home to show me and buy because they only keep adults in the store. I don't know what price I should be looking for.

55 gal is probably good for only 1 fish. Try somethingphishy.com They show what the FHs look like and prices are reasonable...

the fish that come from there are very low quality.

Well I won't be ordering mine off of the internet. I just go to chinatown here. Lots of fish stores and a few very nice, very clean and reputable.

Choose a fh that you are content with..
Or ask the shop owner to choose the best out of the batch.. If they are reputable, I'm sure you will get a nice fh with a reasonable price..

Flowerhorns are very interesting fish.....very aggressive.....very colorful.....very owner responsive.....Keep the gravel colors light, like the natural color you were saying....natural plant pictured backgrounds are good, nothing black or really dark....as for plants and things its a good idea cause it will give him or her things to play with...my male FH is always grabbing rocks and plants and throwing them around the tank...I have been keeping flowerhorns for about the last two years...
