Hoplarchus psittacus spawn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My water out of the tap is pH ~ 7, but it is very soft. I have a large peat sock in the sump. As a result, the pH is usually closer to 5. I keep the temp. warm, ~84F.

I myself have soft tapwater. My ph is 6.4 and temp is 80f. Would you suggest that i up my temp and lower my ph a bit more? I have some peat which i can use. Also when yours paired off what it the typical south american vitual behaviour?

Thanks claire

I might up the temp a little, and use the peat, but I wouldn't otherwise try to change your water chemistry.

Mine paired off quickly after sharing the tank with 4 others for 2 years, and kept the others pinned to one side of the tank. Not as aggressive about this as a typical CA pair would be (the didn't kill anything), but still very territorial. BTW, I then moved the 4 non-paired fish out of the tank, and it looks like i've got another pair forming from those.

I may need a translation of that last question, since it looks like there may be a typo, and a couple of possible intended questions. :D

i think she was asking if it was typical cichlid ritual behavior when they paired up i.e. locking jaws, flaring, shaking around. i have not spawned parrots, but i think most cichlids will do that :)

OIC! :D Mine never did any lip-locking that I observed. Some "dancing". The main thing that tipped me off to what was going on was the pattern becoming more "contrasty" and the other fish being kept away from "their" area.

Congrats on a great fish pair!

Thanks for the advice. I think i will gradually up my temp a little and see what happens. Hopefully one day i will be successful in spawning these guys like yourself.
