Hoplias Aimara & Peacock Bass

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just had my stingrays damage a gill on one of my 7" peacock bass. I knew it wouldn't heal and the fish would have more trouble breathing down the road so I decided to cull it and put it into my Aimara tank. LOL My 18" aimara ate the peacock bass like it was a smelt! You may want to try it with your peacock bass but I know my Aimara will kill anything in it's tank. Maybe if the Aimara is alot smaller then the peacock bass and you grow them out together it might work. It's funny how everybody wants to community an Aimara wolf fish when in the end it's a solo predator.

Yes mine is brutal and will eat or destroy anything whether it fits in it's mouth or not!

if i put a 7" peacock bass with my 18" peacock bass it would be eaten like smelt too though so thats not a fair call.

I'd be putting a 10" Aimara with peacock bass at the smallest 12"

Yes, it's possible to mix Aimara with pbass, bichir, datnoid, fei feng, arowana, masheer, clown loach, clown knife, uaru, silver dollar, etc... as long as the fish is not too small to fit its mouth.

I think the point about size is very valid - i won't be putting 7" bass with 18" Aimara or the other way around, these are both extremities and frankly would be pretty stupid of me posting on here saying will this work.

All sizes are compatible in terms of eating each other, i wouldn't expect either party to try and eat each other my only concern would be the aggression levels - i don't want the aimara killing precious cichla for pure fun and that is what i'm asking you guys who have experience with this fish.

I also ask that you think past those tanks which have only had aimara and therefore have developed that striking aggression and even go for the owner when they are near the tank, if they have been grown in tanks with cichla (or other fish) are they still too aggressive then?

It's not that hard haha Buy one Aimara little smaller or same size of your P. Bass, let them grow together ! If you add a bigger Aimara, things could happen. If you add a TOO smaller Aimara, things could happen. haha

About add a half size P. Bass in a tank that an 18" Aimara was being kept ALONE....really...what would you expect ? That your Aimara will kiss the P. Bass ? hahaha
Any predator fish that are being kept ALONE for a long time and then you add other fish, for sure this predator will be agressive ! haha

Good Luck man !!! ;D

Bass are by nature, very capable and rarely get into trouble, so long as they're large enough that any threat is only to their fins. My Curupira HATES my bass but I don't see split fins, even at feeding time as the Bass are far wiser than they look.

To be fair it would probably be OK given the sizes you are talking about. As I am sure you are well aware there is always a risk.

Out of curiosity were have you found an Aimara?

Oddball express can import them - if you search for them on aquarist and contact Ross he says they are 28cm - £695 i think they were.

I thought this aswel, they have the space and use it wisely so unless the aimara is a character that chases fish down which are large than himself anyway its should be ok... i hope

suggest you try a cheaper similar size fish then your PBs , the brutal character ones, are really killers , will attempt to bite , but you never know until you keep it , some have mild personality
