I'm more or less convinced it's a common Malabaricus because it does have a lateral line (that keeps fading in and out changing patterns/hue).
but then it looks a lot like this Lacerdae - Sao Francisco photo I found here http://www.geocities.com/hoplias_research/hoplias_lacerdae.html
When he was at the shop, the stripe was less apparent, was hoping to luck out, looking at him now, has changed shades again, can see a pretty pronounced lateral stripe... In anycase will share the photos. Shop said the fish is from Venezuela. New to this species. Sure seem to be a lot of variants, but that's probably from the color changing.
15inch, sure does look the part. Have him in a split tank, some 6" caribe pygos next door caught him flaring his gills at.
Question: do I need a cover for this guy?
