Hoplias ID confirmation please.

he's more active now, changing locations, not shy at all, flashing gills at piranhas next door, chasing the cat when it walks by...

This photo is from a taiwanese fish atlas:

shows this guy as a "var." whats the diff between "var" and "sp"?

var. is like the same species but from different collection points, could have different coloration but is biologically the same fish. Sp. is a different fish, ex. different number of scales, skeletal structure etc.

yep.
but that middle fish,hoplias macrophthalmas var. is actually a black wolf.
now a species on its own.
