Hoplias Malabaricus Personality

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't. But that's not something we can tell you - You need to decide if you want a log, or a "pet."

You WILL have a quiet, "empty" planted tank, as you mentioned - but that's totally up to you.

I've honestly owned 10-15 probably in the last 30 years. About 1-3 out of all those malas had a personality that would encourage me to buy another one. I always had the aquariums that they were in decorated with plants/rocks. IMO, if you want one that is tame and has a personality, you'd have to keep it in a bare bottom tank with no decorations except for floating plastic plants.

I had a mala for 2 years , I think it kinda looked like a microlepis them again malas looks vary to much and I was younger and not as knowledgeable as I am now. The first one I kept stood 7 inches for 2 years in a 55 then I got rid of it. I got another one at 12 inches had it for almost a year and it only grew about an inch but got much thicker. The first one stood at the bottom and picked fights with fish that came close and were larger than it. The second one started no fights and stood floating all day and would let me let him, if I puff me cheeks out it would flare up at me. It was my favorite fish. Would follow me back and forth sometimes. I just got another one at about an inch. Trying to figure out what to feed it now since it's so small.

The second one I had was in a 120 though so maybe the extra space was what caused it to want to be active . If not then it just comes down to the individual fish.
