Hoplias sp..please id

It's a Malabaricus, but I'm not sure what is going on with the red fins. That does not look normal or well.

Why Mala?

The head looks just like my Lac?

Not trying to argue by any means, but would like to discuss arriving at this opinion...... :)

I don't think the red is ammonia burn or anything bad, it doesn't look quite like any ammonia burn/bacterial I've ever seen. First off its even, if it was bacterial it would be more blotchy, but all his fins look exactly the same. Secondly, why can't wolf fish have bright color? Erythrinus and hoplerythrinus are pretty colorful, why wouldn't some of that color translate into some hoplias specie? Those Iguazu wes brought in have that nice bright green to em, I'd love to see a grow out thread of one of those

I thought it could be a Mala var. at first too based on coloration but once I compare head shapes and such I'm gonna +1 DB in that it looks lucerde.

Richard,

Your pics make me want one of these things pretty bad. Gorgeous wolf, but VERY little info out there on them.

Can you tell us about the temperament? Is he a feisty lil bugger? Kept with tank mates?

Do you have any info on the growth rate or suspected max size? Didn't know how much info the previous owner gave you.....

When Wes brought his in it was originally called a Lacerdae, and looking at your pics I can definitely see the resemblance. Your wolf's head looks just like my lower Xingu Lacerdae.

Hi Alan,

Sorry I have no info what so ever, that's why I posted it lol! I can't even help you with characteristics, we have only had it a few days, not really long enough to observe, these things take a week or two usually at the very least to settle into new surroundings before showing their true character.
It was in fact reserved today to be collected next week, if I notice anything unusual about it I will post again.

Thanks again all.

Richard.

I've seen pictures of this fish advertised as Iguazu before also, i think it has originally come through Max at some stage Richard, when i went to his for my Armatus he had this in with them (Or something very similar).

Your right Ash.....that's the exact same fish.
