Hoplias tank mate?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IS it one of Wes's?

IF so I don't think anyone really knows what his green eyes are.

Regardless....... I keep wolves with pretty much anything. Regardless of species. Never found anything they hate or that hate them.

Not from Wes or whoever that seller!...I don't even know him nor knowing him selling fish here lol
I got my wolf from a trusted LFS, we did all the research and compared our fish/pics with other local wolf keepers and confirmed it's a Lac.
Thanks for the information though.

having tankmates with a hopilas is a hit or miss it could go either way depending on the wolfs temperment.
+1 and if it is a lac you want larger species of bichir. Especially since they're slender, anything that could fit he will fit as soon as he gets hungry I'd think with a lac unless the other fish is added after. My experience isn't with a lac again so I'm going off of other wolf species I've had. DB would give you the best info but then again he has his in a large tank so it may be different in a smaller tank.

Sorry for the derail but I found a really interesting picture (well I've seen it before but didn't think much of it at the time)... DB, u said that u have no idea what the green eye "lacs" wes had. It's been nagging at me to find out what it is so I did some digging around. A great mfk member who went to Uruguay to collect fish brought back what he claims to have been IDed as cf. Australis... Green eyes at 2 inches looks similar to the ones wes brought back. Here's the pic he posted of it of the actual fish for sale. Eye color is the thing I was looking for.

Could the little green "lacs" wes is selling really be Australis? Here's Wes's pics for a comparison:ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1428596536.240327.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1428596733.619245.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1428596760.448438.jpg
Interesting thing is Wes's lac has red eyes 80% of the time and it's in a tank that is covered in green on 3 sides

While I'm not really care about real wolf ID I got from Wes but after a week in my tank with black background and black substrate my little wolf look more dark brown with black pattern...no green whatsoever!

Yes, I believe Ken's "Green Lacs" are Australis. I think Wes's green eyed guys might be Australis too, BUT I have a lil 2"er here from Ken and there's no green eyes whatsoever.

Everyone hopes for Lacs, but in the real world they're a pain to find. Yet, in a tank with different species in it there seems to be differences you don't really notice when comparing pics.

Wes had what I believe are real Lacs. Why? Huge hump back. The other wolves being sold as Lacs don't have this hunch back. Put several different species in the same tank and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about..... ;)

And anyone who thinks Lacs and Australis look similar when bigger is crazy. IF what I have here is indeed Australis (One of the first Hoplias Wes got his hands on last year) it looks like a friggin gold wolf mixed with a Lac. Definitely NOT my cup of tea. Barely even looks Hoplias.

Sweet. Can't wait to watch it develop.

I can't find a LFS to trust if my life depended on it, let alone with Hoplias. heck there's only a handful of people on this forum that can ID properly. You must feel very lucky to be associated with such a knowledgeable LFS.

Wouldn't be the same store that sold you the "one of a kind" Aimara is it?

I'd say it's very possible. The australis tend to be a brownish color with a hunch back aswell maybe not as much as a lac but they have it according to the link that was provided on the taxonomy of the lac group.

DB idk if you noticed but in the first pic of the Uruguayan hoplias labeled as "cf. Australis" do u notice how high backed it is? Especially compared to Wes's? Something tells me it could be more lacerdae like. With some wolves like even the green eyed "lacs" from Wes mine doesn't display green eyes very often as he shows red eyes. Maybe that's why the small one from ken isn't displaying green. Really am not sure at all tbh on the ID of them. Guess I'll have to stare at him for a few more months to see...

Alan if u don't like your Australis by all means feel free to send him over to me at any time ;)

Which ones do you want? The 10"er from Wes? Or Ken's 5"er and 2"er? You can have them all..... Send money to Wes so I can get some more lil guys.

I must not know what I'm looking at cause there's no hunch back on the 10"er here. And he's pretty green.
