I got a 5" wolf fish yesterday. It did great until I woke up this moring and some how it had jumped and landed in a cardboard box of shoes a few feet away. I woke up around six to us the restroom checked the tank when I went back to bed and he was fine. I don't if its cause i was half sleep but I never even heard him jump just heard his slapping up against the cardboard lucky I found him when I did other wise he will be a goner.

nice save. Wolves are underrrated jumpers. Did you have a secure cover? My old red wolf used to jump and nearly smack me on the face when i did water changes.

I just got back from Home Depot. I pick up some 4'x13" acrylic sheets that I'm going to cut to the size I need. They really are under rated. He jumped at least 3' from the tank into the box.

Only thing about the acylic sheets depending on grade and thickness is that the humidity will warp it if its thin and it can be hard to cut, I've picked up some from lhs and it just cracks when u cut it, tried scissors, snips, fine blade hand saw etc. Best method if your acrylic was **** like mine is to get a 2"x4" put it where you want to cut it and use a box knife or razor blade and repeatedly go up and down with heavy pressure, eventually it will go thru or you can go half way and it will just split on the cut easily.

Drilling holes in it may help the warping, or framing it with wood. But hopefully your sheets aren't as cheap as mine.

Either way good luck and glad your fish survived! Cheers

Mines are cheap and thin but luckily I have a set of 4. I was thinking of layering two or more sheets. Two sheets will be almost a 1/4" thick. I was anticipating warping witch is why I got the set. At least now I know to use a razor I was going to just use a circular saw

When i got my wolf from the LPs, the store put a syrofoam cover on the tank to minimize trauma on the jumping wolve's head. If my wolf was a human, it would of had at least 10 serious concussions by now.

The styro might be better then the acrylic. Plus I have half a glass hood that came with the tank

LOL THAT ALMOST HAPPENED TO ME LAST NIGHT

cover every hole with the wolves, my red has a habit of slapping himself against the lid a few times a night. if its a jumpy kind of night lol. sometimes no jumping at all.

I guess I answered my own question.

Remarks: In its native range, this predacious fish has been reported to move overland through wet vegetation or mud at night or during rainstorms (Taphorn 1992). Live fish are difficult to handle and potentially dangerous because of their sharp teeth, strong jaws, and slippery bodies.
