I had a red wolf that killed himself after couple days jumping and hitting the glass lid after red I think mala is pretty jumpy

I have 2 malas neither are to bad for jumping one does the odd time I hear the smack against the lid the other likes to jump at the food before I let it go lol

I was told that they can be out of water for some time. So if you find him and he looks dead, try putting him back in to see if he comes back to him self.

I plan on using a bunch of sponge filters, cut them in half down the middle width and layer them along the top of the tank to cut down on damage from jumping.

I know that but two days is a long timeout of water I'd imagine it would dry up

For a top I use a styrofoam top... looks pretty ratchet but it works lol and its a good insulator so it keeps heat in better.
