Just wondering if any MFKers keep or have kept them.I saw some in a lfs the other day I intend to research them and may try keeping them.

Don't they eat nothing but this special species of ant?

That and their ability to shoot blood from their eyes is what I've heard about them.If the ant thing is true,I dont think they would be too easy to keep, never heard of any ant breeders/deales.

no im almost positive they can eat crix
they are becoming more popular
but i would hate to try holding one

i sell alot of them out of my shop they do well on crickets and will only shoot blood out of there eyes when provoked but with out fire ants they can not do so

p.s. here is a trick for ya if you feed your crickets oranges the acidic acid from them creates the same effects of feeding them fire ants this can also be used when feeding your dart frogs

Where did you hear this from? I'm not saying its wrong, mind you; I've just never heard that before and would like more substantial evidence supporting that claim.

My GF got a horned lizard at the Daytona show and despite our best efforts in setting it up in the proper habitat and feeding it harvester ants (which is the actual preferred ant species they eat), it still died a few months later.

It is my honest opinion that these lizards are unfit for captive keeping and should be illegal to continue collecting from the wild.

Keeping these guys is a waste of their population... I mean if a zoo can keep AND breed them, fine with me, but it just shouldn't be an option for private keepers. Its not fair to the animals. Would if some alien from outer space thought we made a cool pet but all they fed us was some bizarre alien jelly and we all died of starvation?

It is possible to keep and bred this guys but ants are defenetly the main corse. If you want to be able to keep this guys alive and well then you must raise at the same time several ant colonys. Crickets are only a suplement. Lets not forget that this guys are among the hardest lizards to keep and in my humble opinion they should be kept by very experienced keepers only. Lots of people tried it all time just to fail miserably. I think we have more than our fair share of hardy and just as interesting species wich doesant make the the keeping of this guys worty. Untill the day real captive bred animals become readbly avaible as well as ant colonys, this is one animal to avoid
