Hello, I know that Ted (anythingfish) Has a motoro with the spikes growing on the disk. Im sure he will post in.

That actually Todd from anything fish & they are called Denticles. Most say it is a from a certain ray, but I have seen many rays with it.
My Bella has tham all over her disc & they are growing, she also has huge ones on her tail. go to out site & take a look.

Attached is a denticle from one of my rays. The supposed only ray with these denticles is a constellata, but I dont think it is just that ray.

does this denticle on the disc ever go away? or is it once it grew on the disc and its gonna be there forever?

I had a female motoro that had lots of them. Most were the size of chocolate chips but some were much larger (almost the size of a Hershey's Kiss).

I wonder if it has something to do with water quality.. such as more hardness/calcium in the water. These 'constellata' rays are harvested from a specific area from what I remember, but pattern is extremely variable.. almost any ray can become 'constellata' but its just a physical trait. I would say much like a pearlscale goldfish, its a byproduct of water quality.

Marshy what is your calcium like in your water.. and your gH/kH?
