Horrible!: 31 fish poisoned, hammered and stabbed to death!

Isn't that the point of a punishment...it wouldn't be much of a deterrent if it was fun.
Hello; You nailed it. It seems that once corporal punishment was banned, all forms of punishment soon followed. For example we used the writing of sentences such as "I will not hit Tommy" as punishment. This was soon stopped becaue it was not considered an educational activity. I then began to have students copy portions of the text or the safety rules for bus riding as punishment. This was stopped because it "turned the students off from writing."
Toward the end the only thing left was that I send the worst offenders out of the classroom, but that was not allowed in the lower grades and was frowned on at the high school level. Sending high school students to the office was only a temporary thing at best. During the last year that I taught ( I had my time in at that point) I only got one student removed from my room for the whole term. That was because he had stuck a pencil in my chest and the principal did not want me to call the police. That class had about five true trouble makers and the routine was that I had to send them out one by one for disruptions each day. This took about half the class period.
It was a big contrast to the AP Biology class I taught that year. Very serious students and not one bit of trouble.

Not sure it's the smacking but more the buddy parents. When I went to school most of my teachers had a notarized permission slip to smack me. While none of them ever hit me the though of a phone call home scared the crap out of me. I think in total I got smacked 3 times in my life once by accident. I know sadistict little monsters who got smacked regularly and one who were never touched. But once you see a parent who get hysterical helo mommy every time the kid is even a little unhappy that one is going to be a nasty little **** 100% of the time.
Also I was taught the love of animals from a very young age. Given my less then happy up bringing (Russian in a blue collar hood end of the cold war) animals are probably the main reason I'm not doing time.

Why would they do this? The only reason I can think of is the kids didn't like the students raising the fish and wanted to "prank" them.
Which category are you? Kid or parents?
