My puppy was rushed to the emergency vet last night, he ate some mushrooms from my yard and is now in the veterinary I.C.U. He made it through the night but they don't know if he has any permanent neurological or organ damage. I spent most of the day with him today just holding him on my lap and during his tests. He is alive and walking around but was pretty much nonresponsive to me or his surroundings. When I left him today when visiting hours were over he was still totally spaced out and has a completely empty look in eyes like the lights are on but no one is home. I am totally lost and beside myself, he is my best friend. If anything happens to him I will seriously loose my mind. I know this isn't fish related at all but I was hoping since everyone on here is an animal lover you can keep him in your thoughts and prayers for a full and speedy recovery, this little guy is my everything.
Thank you everyone for taking the time to listen :-)

This is my favorite picture of him :-)

I just herd from the emergency vet, His blood work came back ok but they think the neurological effects are going to be permanent which means he is going to make it but he will probably never really know what is going on around him anymore I feel like I have totally let him down and such a horrible person right now

Wow I am so sorry to hear that. We have a dog and it would be overwhelming for me if anything were to happen to him.

It was a terrible accident but not your fault that this happened. Puppies chew on things and that is just their nature.

I have read about mushroom toxicity before and there are a few different possibilities for how this might progress. There is no way to have a good idea of the specific damage that it might have done without knowing the mushroom species. He looks like he is pretty young and I bet that will improve his chances for recovery.

The fact that you feel that way means you are NOT a horrible person.
If you were, you wouldn't care.

Any idea what kind of mushroom?

And also, "they THINK"....
That doesnt mean it is certain.
I'm praying for you, and your dog.

Thank you for the kind words :-) the vet said since he made it through the night he is going to survive but depending on which kind of mushroom he ate he could have permanent organ or neurological/ brain damage. unfortunately due to where I live the majority of the mushrooms that grow are psilocybin mushrooms and since we have has a ton of rain they are allover the place. The vet said if he did in fact eat those there is a chance he may be spaced out and not aware of whats going on permanently, pretty much he will be on a full time trip. It totally crushed me today when I visited him and he had no clue I was even holding and petting him, I broke down like a little b**ch in the vets office. He came into my life last year after I had a major surgery that didn't end up working and I fell into a severe deep depression and he was the one who brought me right out of it and back to my old self. When he was 2 weeks old him, his siblings and his mother were abandoned and then put into a kill shelter in TN, he was the last one to be adopted and was almost put down until a private no kill shelter took him then I rescued him through petfinder and gave him his forever home. When I adopted him I made a promise to protect and care for him and I feel like I have totally let him down :-(

I was looking through my pictures and I just found this one of him sitting in my lap the day he came home with me from the rescue shelter :)

That is very true that "they think" isn't certain, it just killed me to see him like that when I went there today. even when he is sick he is usually beyond happy to see me and when he saw me today not even a tail wag. the entire time he was on my lap he was just looking off into space which scared me to death and upset me to the core. I am praying he is like this just because he is sick and scared but if god forbid he is going to be like this permanently if the vet says he isn't suffering in any way what so ever I don't care if I have to spoon feed him every hour for the rest of his life I am going to give up everything I have to for him. the day I adopted him I made a promise to care for him and protect him no matter what and I broke that promise when I didn't see him eating the mushrooms. I feel like I have totally let him down :(

They have no clue what kind he ate, we have so many different kinds growing there is no way to tell. unfortunately due to where I live the majority of the mushrooms that grow are Death Caps (Amanita phalloides), Golden Caps (Psilocybe cyanescens) and Wavy Caps (Psilocybe cyanescens) and since we have has a ton of rain, oak and pine trees they pop up all over the place. The vet said the death caps are out of the question because he is going to survive and with those death comes with in the first 12 hours so the if he did in fact eat the hallucinogenic ones and not another kind that is unknown to grow in the area where I live there is a chance depending on which one of them he ate and how much he may be spaced out and not aware of whats going on permanently, pretty much he will be on a full time trip. :(
