Horrible news, I am beyond beside myself :(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry to hear about your dog.

I wouldn't worry about the after effects of the mushroom, though. My one cat is spaced out all the time because of a fever he had when we got him as a kitten, and he lives a normal life beyond being spaced out and extremely jumpy. Also, the effects of some mushrooms usually wear off in a year or so (at least the magic ones according to a study), so he might eventually get back to being normal in time.

At least he survived. He will prolly make some improvements at the very least. I wouldnt blame yourself. The fact you have taken your dog to the vet and went thru all this with him proves you are a good dog owner. Stuff happens, just like children you cant watch them 100 percent of the time. I hope you and your dog pull thru this. Poor lil guy must of been tripping balls big time

I feel so much empathy towards you and your beautiful puppy.. not many things make me choke up and cry.. but your thread touched me deeply.. we all try to do the best we can.. and because we do not have all the answers all of the time.. things happen... and so sad that this time the lesson price is so high..but this is not your fault.. you are not to blame.. you did not know mushrooms could do this.. and especially did not think it was the kind you had.. no one ever had this problem before... right ? i hope he makes it through.. and with your love he will get better..that is my prayer for you.. very sad but hope theres a happy ending..please no matter what happens do not blame youself.. when we open the door to let our pet out.. that is the outside world.. anywhere and everywhere lurks something that can harm you..most of the time it doesn't amount too much.. but one bite of the wrong thing .. my horses are out in the pasture all day..among mushrooms.. so far so good.. we knock them down to dust.. but theres 5 to take its place.we cannot control everything.. even if it is something we love dearly..

Wow, i'm so sorry you have to go through this! My dog and best friend (don't tell my wife i said that) got hit by a car about 6 months ago and we ended having to amputate his front leg. I was worried that things would never seem the same but I was surprised to find that the love for him never changed a bit. Though your dog may never be the same after this, he's still your dog! Good luck! Keep us posted!

I am very sorry to hear this =[ I know it would kill me inside if anything ever happened to my dog. You are a good dog owner though - you did everything you should have in order to help him. Its hard to watch a dogs every move, it is not your fault he ate the mushroom. Dogs like to investigate things, eat things, try things it is what they do. Don't blame yourself. A good dog owner take care of their dog when things are not the best and that is what you have done. My prayers are with you and your dog - I hope he pulls through and turns out fine, he is a cute one! I am sure he appreciates you being by his side even though he can't show it right now.

This is horrible, I feel your pain so much right now. This has brought back memories that haunt my soul and always will.
I lost the love of my life last june and my other dog the july before that, just thinking of them hurts, just looking at a picture makes me weep but I can tell you that things get better, it may never stop hurting but you will begin to live with it, my beagle was hit by a car in june, I wanted to die, I wanted to give up everything to just have my pup back but those things are unrealistic, as is blaming yourself for what happened and you must know this.
So whatever happens don't give up, don't blame yourself, and never forget the dog that was once your life. Maybe, when the time comes, you can adopt a new pup and share your love once again.

Stay strong friend

Thank you everyone for all the kind words, they truly mean so much to me!! after the call that I got today that said his vitals dropped through the floor and they had no clue why I actually just got a call from the hospital at midnight and as of 10:30 tonight his vitals have stabilized he started eating again and the best news of all is he was ready to to come home!!!!!!! I am so thankful that the hospital is open 24 hours because no sooner did I hear he could come home I was I out the door in my pajamas...lol I can only imagine what the hell they must have thought when this 6'5" 280lb giant walked through the door in a gumby tshirt and shorts asking for his puppy...hahaha He has been home for around an hour and I couldn't be happier. He defiantly is not the same as before all this but when I picked him up and he saw me he started to wag his tail like crazy so I know he at lease knows who I am and was excited to see me. The vets said he will defiantly survive this but will probably be a little off. Right now he is on 24 hour watch for the next 2 weeks to make sure he has no further issues. They are almost positive that the mushroom he ate was one in the Psilocybe cyanescens family because of the toxicology report and while he was in the I.C.U 3 more dogs came in with the same issues as him after eating mushrooms and there tox reports showed the same chemicals as his. the results showed he pretty much he ate enough to send a 300lb man into a severe trip.I told the vet that I feel like such a bad "pet dad" for not protecting him and he looked at me and said "If you didn't rush him here like you did and he was treated even 10 minutes later he would have died because he would have absorbed 100% of the toxins, you saved his life" I feel better hearing that but Iam still so upset with myself for the whole situation. On the down side I may have to sell some of my aquarium set ups to pay for his hospital bill. I nearly had a heart attack when they said "Ok Mr. Newman that will be $3890.00"...lol I would seriously sell everything I own to save Caleb though he is truly like my son. Ever since I have been disabled he has been there right next to me helping me through the bad times and sharing the good times. Thank you every one again so much for your kind words and support through all this!! I know we don't know each other personally but seeing that there are actually great people out there that care as much as you guys do really helped me through this!! We are going to petco first thing in the morning and getting him some welcome home toys and then depending on if its sold or not yet the l.f.s down the street has a beautiful polypterus ornatipinnis which I know Caleb would love me to get for my new 210 set up, polypterus are his favorite fish!!!...hahahaha
Thank you everyone so much again for all your kind words and support, I will keep the thread upgraded with his progress

Caleb Right when we got home...lol :D
