Horrible smell when feeding specific aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Within about an hour of feeding, and lasting for about 12-14 hours after, this tank smells and it fills my entire house with an overwhelming earthy/bitter smell.

The food is obviously the source of the odor.

Different tank size, different fish, different dead spots, different filtration, etc-etc can all be part of the problem, or solution to the problem, but the food itself is clearly the source of the odor.

Don't feed for a week, and you will be odor free the entire time. lol

Yea I will feed a couple of pellets on Wednesday and see how it goes. 65g is an obnoxious tank dimensions wise, as it's only 3' wide and ~2' tall. Maybe I will try adding a power head to increase circulation and get water into the filtration system faster. The AC110 definitely has the volume but maybe not the depth to adequately handle the load.

I personally stopped feeding Hikari Carnivore pellets because of the smell after feeding. My wife would complain about the smell everytime. The fish loved the Hikari Carnivore pellets lol. It didn't smell earthy to me?

I've found that more oxygenation = less smell. Gotta agree that Massivore can get raunchy but thankfully none of my fish like it.

Maybe I will go back to feeding frozen foods. I stopped making my own fish food when I moved as it's harder to get the fish out here but I think it was better overall.

There are other, way better pellet options than Hikari...

Massivore stinks! Could also be the type of wood you’re using. Had a tank like that which always stunk and it turned out the wood was rotting at the core. It was disgusting
