You can't 'see' the parasites and diseases that feeders carry. For the love of God don't give fish feeders! It may be now, it may be 3 months from now-but eventually they'll be the death of your fish.
I'm sorry for your loss, truly I am. But leave the feeders at the store.

OP do not pay any attention to this post. Obviously this person has never kept any wild caught predatory characins.

These fish are not simple cichlids that will eat what ever is thrown in a tank. They are highly evolved predators that will not except anything but live fish. Until you have tortured and starved them for a long time. Then they will except market shrimp sometimes. And sometimes this torture ends in a dead fish that has starved to death.

It is also a good idea to quarantine the new feeders and treat them for any illness's before feeding.

But you can do everything by the book with payara and still fail alot. They are a extremely sensitive fish only rivaled by wild caught discus.

And I know a few discus keepers that have failed at payara as well.

thanks yeh i know put a post up asking the guy if he ever kept any payara! but im going to try my luck with a tat as soon as i get my 150G!

Tats are alittle easier.

ive never had payaras but ive had wild natives and the dont take none live food very well but iv got them on mysis shrimp. maybe u could but like shrimp or whatever in a current and it miht think that its live.

i can try that with my needlenose cause there the only other ones im having trouble taking non-live foods!

Why on earth wouldn't you at least quarrantine the feeders then? Do you have a problem with that also? I'm just suggesting you be responsible.

Step 1- Go to Wal-mart/LFS/Petsmart & buy a 5g or 10g kit for like $20
Step 2- Get a handful of Mollies & chunk them in the tank with some seeded bio-media, salt & crushed coral
Step 3- Wait a few weeks....
Step 4- Collect all the feeders your predators can handle

I have a 10g for my Molly feeders & a 1.5g for Mystery Snail breeding. These 2 cultures produce plenty of live food for all of my tanks & I only had to treat for parasites & crap one time when I stocked them.

+1 except I dont wait a few weeks. I'll throw the feeders in a cycled 10 gallon and treat the tank with QuICK Cure for 3 days w/ no w/c's inbetween. On the 4rth day I'll do a 8 gallon water change and on the 5th, I start feeding them to my fish. Been doing it this way for years without ever a problem.
