Horrifying algae... Help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
(IMHO) Your best "natural" bet for algae reduction is "Weiss Algae Magic" - it's organic and (should not) harm anything in your tank. I've had it work wonders on algae blooms.

Is that like a 5 or 10 gallon nano tank? If so and you aren't already heavily stocked, I would suggest 2 or 3 otocinclus catfish. The lfs should have some and I think petsmart can order them for you. Great little dudes are basically mini plecos that will gobble most algae. They are a bit delicate but do a really good job of cleaning that type of green algae. I had one live for 3 years in my 20. Just a thought if you can't get it controlled with other means.

Is the algae just on the sides of the tank? Or is it a bloom in the water, turning it green?

If it's just on the sides, there are LOTS options (Twig Catfish, some of the BEST!; Otocinclus; "regular" [Chinese/Gold] Algae Eaters), and SNAILS!!! :)

Interesting. I had a UV a few years ago, and it really didn't do squat (might have been from Aqueon, not certain). Personally, I hesitate with SunSun products, as they have no support in the US. I do, however, use one of their powerheads as additional in-tank filtration, aeration, and water movement, and it works really well (though you can only buy the replacement sponges on AliExpress (I had no issues with my order from AE, fortunately, just a long shipping time).

i am using sunsun UV 13w 800L/hr for both my 6ft tanks, there was once when 1 of the UV pump spoil and i remove it from the tank. For that 3 weeks to 1 month without UV filter, i could see green and brown algae growing all over my tank, i now installed back the UV pump and i can say green algae is very minimal and no sight of brown algae....

The purpose of UV filter is to remove free flowing algae but those stuck on tank still has to be manually removed.

to me sunsun is cheap enough that i don't find a need to have support, i will just order from china and ship it directly via air so it takes about 1 week or 2 weeks max. i have my own china account for that. i use taobao which is their local version of amazon. Aliexpress i think is more pricey....

And note, my tank is outdoor though under shelter but the front of my tank is exposed to sunlight at least 6-8 hours a day...... the rest of my tank is stickered full black with oyama sticker
