recently at one of my lfs i saw a neat little canister hanging off the front of the tank. Turns out it was a magnum. The water in the thing was crystal clear. It was on a 40-50g tank tho. If it was put on a 210g or a 110g would it still serve its purpose. Doesnt have to be like fiji water but does anyone else use these on there bigger tanks.
Also does anyone have any other ways of polishing there water of with something similar not looking at adding pads to my filters or anything like that.

anyone?

All I have ever used are magnum canister filter, but I use the magnum 350's canister. Yes that canister, though not large enough for the tank you are going to use it on, will get it clean. Two things, it will take longer to clear up as you have much more water to cycle through, and secondly you will have to clean or change the cartridge a couple of time to make it crystal clear. Why not just buy a larger magnum canister that meets you tank requirmemnets to get the same result. Remmebr the more filtration you have the less maintenance you have to do in the long run....

I've used a H.O.T. Magnum on my 180 for a few years but it backs up my wet/dry....If you are going to use it as the lone filter on one of those tanks with a decent bio load then it will be overworked and you will have to shut it off and clean it pretty often.

No no its not the only filtration hahaha. fx5 4 hydro v sponges aquaclear 500 and a eheim 2217 with a eheim 2260 on the way.
its simply a polisher that i would run on my 55g,110g,210g for a week or so to clean the water up then switch it onto another for another week.

Oh,well in that case it should be fine.

They work pretty good with the micron cartridge.
Even the 350 can be a "move around, hob, polisher".
Just understand the flow rates of these filters.
HOT 250 is 250gph, max, with a clean cartridge.
Mag 350 is 350gph, again, with a clean cartridge.
The smaller the tank, the sooner you would see any improvement.
If your tanks have a bunch of free floating debris, they will clog up pretty fast.
The cartridge is 8 micron rated and that is really a small hole.
For the money, if buying new, you could make a unit out of a external capable pump, some pipe/tubing, and a "whole house" water filter and save a couple bucks.
You won`t save a bunch, but you will get a better amount of flow, depending on the pump you use.
These filter cartridges clean in the 20 micron range for the rust/sediment and 10 micron for the taste/odor.
The cartridges are almost twice the size of the Mag, so they should last twice as long between cleanings.

just the man i wanted to see in this thread. Can you give me a rough estimate on that water polisher you built.
Because here in canada house water filters are about 50-60 bucks and i would have to get a pump as well. What GPH did u you?
How long between cleans.

I've had some talks with kaiser about that setup. I actually started to build one once but ended up returning the unit (I was trying to do something a bit more complex and altogether unnecessary). The filter he's got hanging there (just actual whole house filter portion, not the pump) costs about 25-30$ at Lowes IIRC. 5 or 6 bucks of PVC and whatever it costs you to get the pump and voila. Oh the cartridges came in packs of 2 for around 10$.

I just started using my magnum250 with the 8micron cartridge on my 90gal and it went from a nice heavy flow to a bit more than a trickle after 3 or 4 days, and that was WITH a pre-filter sponge over the intake. I'm hoping that after keeping it going with rotating cartridges for a few weeks I'll get up to a week or so between cartridge changes.
