I have heard that houses' hot water tanks have sediment build up in them which makes the hot water from the tap bad to drink. Does this affect fish? How bad is it to use hot water from the tap?
As hot water dissolves more "shtuff" than cold water along with the constant heating cooling which will build up significant amounts of "whateva" in the hot water heater; how many ppm difference is a good question? I have a well & only use cold water as to keep the lime and other buildups to a minimum and this is Just a theory; kinda like gravity?
Don't use it a lot of water heaters have brass parts. Brass is an aloy of zinc and copper if it starts to break down you will end up with high concentrations of these two metals.
Also there is rust in hot water heaters. There is a reason why hot water ruins the membrane in an R/O system. Stop using the hot water for aquariums, just use cold water then run your heater to warm it up in a barrel.

i agree.. from what i know their is a greater amount of metal sediments on hot water. that's why never use hot water from the faucet for food preparation or drinking. However, i see one possible way you can get out of it... if you connect a R/O filter on your hot and cold water system i think you'll be fine since the R/O will filter it before it gets to your tank.
I use my hot water to fill my tank . I try to match the temp of the tank otherwise it would take a few days for the tank to reach its normal temp. I throw in water conditioner as well
If you live in an older building or large apartment building, check into what kind of water heater is being used. Majority of the newer water heaters have fiberglass liners and plastic fittings.
Just remember, no matter what kind of building/house you live in, your water is being delivered to your faucet through cast iron, steel or copper pipes, or a combination of them. Hot or cold.
I put in a stainless steal hot water heater in my house because I temperate the water that goes into my tanks. I also put in a house water filter system. I change a lot of water..
