First off i have videos of those dovii when they looked really good when they were at the national zoo. And i have no need to takes pictures of them now. These fish have been gradually losing body mass from lack of care since they got there. Lets be clear this store can get pretty much anything as this guy has been around a long time and has connections. With that being say the store is usually a mess i mean tanks not floor dirty tanks, sick or dead fish are not uncommon. The owner is a a hole with a nasty attitude, they have fish that they will never feed and will waste away and die. He pics and chooses wich fish he wants to care for mostly ones he has paid a lot for others are on their own. I have watched him with my own eyes go around to all the tanks including feeder ponds collect all the dead fish ( including some who were coverd with thick cotton like fungus) then dump them in a tank of p bass for them to eat. Would you then want to buy those bass. I have been in the store when his best worker who has been with him longer than anyone who everyone knows has ask me to watch her back and make sure he isnt looking while she sneaks and feeds fish. Unless he has recently changed it he has always had a no return policy if your fish dies once you buy it its yours no matter why it died. He does have some people he bends rules for to me its more a store you go to if you know him and know how thing works. For those of us who do its a cool place but i dont just send people there who dont. I still shop there sometimes but i never buy expensive fish and i only buy fish that have just come in and have not been there longer than a week. On the other hand H.O.T ALWAYS HAS CLEAN TANKS that get regular water changes, all the fish are feed on a regular basis, all sick fish get treated. The staff at H.O.T are all cool including the owners who will stand and talk to you to try and solve any issues and help you how ever they can even when the store is packed. As far as price both store have some cheap stuff and some overpriced. H.O.T is a one stop shop they have everything fish, live feeders, blackworms, ghost shrimp, brine shrimp and more. Live plankton and green water for saltwater fish. R.O water, tons of driftwood and rock. Lots of different filters, a huge assortment of tanks for sale. The only knock for me on H.O.T is they are far and thats why a lot of folks dont go there as much but the drive doesnt bother me. You have kids who have never seen lots of fish and have very little money they love beltway because you will find some kind of rare fish for like $20. Then some people like to get stuff they feel safe buying even if it has been at the store for months.

I don't think anyone who's been to Beltway is going to disagree with you on any of this, HOT is all around a 10x better LFS. I haven't had anything die from Beltway yet but as you said you have to stick with freshly arrived fish and be wary of particularly sensitive/disease prone fish. I don't agree with how he runs his business or cares for his fish but for someone coming from out of town who isn't looking for a new LFS to be loyal to Beltway keeps stock that you just don't get to see in person in the MD/DC/VA area or most of the East coast for that matter.
