House salt ok to treat ich?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Try adding some salt and also bump up the temperature. This got rid of ich in my tank. Hope it works out for you.

Thanks all for the reply's i have done a 20% water change and added 3 teaspoons of salt (55 galon tank) and am hoping for the best. Will keep everyone updated on my little saum.

Cheers

How's it going?

Hey Snakey, have done the 20% daily water changes and have been adding the salt as recommended and he does seem to be getting a little better. He still swims around occasionally wriggling tryin to get the itch off but he is much more active. How long should it take before he stops "scratching" and swimming funny?

Not sure how long it will take as it depends on how bad it is I think, but keep the routine going until the spot/s are gone, then keep going for several days thereafter.

NB: Make sure you're dissolving the salt in tank water or warmish dechlorinated water before adding to the tank. Betta's really don't like salt too much, so keep this in mind when adding more if you don't do a water change at the same time (the salt will build up too much and he may die).

So he has started twitching and scratching more after this water change and salt addition. Is that normal as in the disease treatment guide it says they get worse before recovering? Is this true from your experiences?

Aquarium salt is the best. Table salt has iodine in it and im not sure how the fish do with that

Please read my earlier posts here. I already explained iodine has nothing to do with anything. In fact, it was never an issue contrary to popular belief.

This has to be expected. It gets worse before it gets better. Keep close watch.

Most important points:
1. Dissolution - Salt grains can burn your fish's skin as they graze around.
2. Aeration - Salt and high temperature can deplete oxygen levels.

Continue salt treatment for 10 days right after the last white spot disappear to ensure the protozoans are completely destroyed. If you insist on using other meds, don't until you suspect you are dealing with salt resistant strains of parasites. By the way, formalin and salt don't mix.

So white spots are gone he has stopped twitching and has his/her colour coming through at 2 inches. Things are looking up!!
