Mixing anything with African cichlids is a risk. Perhaps the surface dwelling may save the arowana but I personally wouldn't risk it. If you can't return the arowana, just watch closely for any fin damage etc. on the arowana.

8x4 ft will not cut it past the initial 2-3 years. It will keep trying to jump out of the tank and will kill itself sooner or later.

Oops I only scanned through this thread and saw fisherman daves message about the interesting mix of tankmates, guessed it was stated
