Actually Smoothhounds are very sensitive to low O2 levels, in fact even more than they are to water temps over 70F. I've heard of Smoothhounds being found in waters as warm as 77-80F(for brief periods), if the O2 level is high enough.

Since the desolved O2 levels in a tank tend to drop as the water temps increase. It's more likely the drop in O2 levels caused the change in behavior, then it was the actual water temps.

In aquarium settings - it's very possible to keep Smoothhounds at 68-72F, provided that you've increase the air intake in the tank.

The O2 levels are a definite factor. I have seen people try to keep Smoothhounds in 80 degree water (not a good idea) and you can see the gills moving a lot faster, the shark looks panicked and will try to find a way out, and like normal Smoothies they never stop and rest on the bottom. With the Smoothies you can see a dramatic difference if the temperature is too high or like mentioned before the O2 levels are not high enough. Another thing that happens is that when the temperature gets high the sharks will digest there food faster and loose visible weight quickly. They get real energetic when they are two warm or lacking O2 and it seems like they burn all of their full which will shorten their lifespan.

Actually that been known to happen with most other species that are kept near the maximum tolerated water temps for prolonged periods as well.

That's why it's usually best when your planning on keeping a shark find out the full tolerated range for any species your interested first - and then set you tank/pond/lagoon's water temp to be near the middle of that range.

For Gray Smoothies the middle of their tolerated temperature range would be about 65-67F. Which is about the same as Leopards, and most other Smoothhounds species.
