I got a Tig this week, a massive 3 inches, that I am growing out to go in a ray tank I am building. Dimensions of 6'X6'X31". I am only going to keep the water about 24" deep. It will be eurobraced, but I plan on leaving open top. My question for you Tig people, is, are they prone to jumping at all? I hardly even see them approaching the surface in all of the youtube videos I have watched. I can cover with a net, but prefer not to. I sure don't want to wake up to it mummified someday, though.
Thanks
Rodger
PS: Thanks to Jurassic Aquatics for selling me this. (shameless plug)

I have a 22" that I raised since 5" and have not had a problem with it jumping. I have always kept my tanks well covered and while it is not prone to jumping like an arowana, it definitely has the streamline body and muscle to jump out if it desires. With that said, withthe dimensions you described id say you should be fine. Plenty of room to dart around if it gets spooked, instead of jumping straight out of the water.

3 massive inches :) must be a cute little button.

I tend to agree but my experience with tigs is limited to 1' and under...

I'd wait for more opinions... still, personally, I think I'd not risk it and then could have more water in the tank.

Stingrays.............why would I need more water in the tank? Plus with the 6" wall above the water the rays won't be going over the top. I am only planning on fish that don't need depth, not that 2 foot isn't fairly deep. I have a Lei that I am growing out as well and understand they aren't big jumpers. There is a post in the Aro thread where the guy has had a Jar in the same tank (almost) as I am building for 3 years with no issues. Who knows what I might do. I can always keep the Tig in the 240.

Sure, Rodger. That's why I said "personally". Sounds like an awesome tank it is going to be. Hope to see a nice pic-loaded thread on it.

When I first read "Lei", I thought of Leiarius genus - too catfish oriented I guess. Took me a few minutes to realize it is Leichardi aro. :)

typically Tigs are not "jumpers"... but with that said... they are a very spookable fish and as anyone knows... when a fish gets spooked, you don't know what it will do until it does it. you are always better to cover a tank anyway (costs you less to run the tank since you conserve some of the heat and you do not need to top up the water levels as often)

There is nothing more heart breaking than waking up to find a beloved/prized fish laying under it's tank... You can make some really cool looking covers if you are worried about looks of them.

Covering it to conserve heat / water is not an option. There is no logical way to cover a 6x6 tank with a solid top.

Tig should be fine. A big lei will def jump out eventually if givin an open space. IME, they spook easiest of all aros and are most unpredictable to where they're gonna crash or leap
