How a historical day can turn into a disaster!!!!! I'm so ****ing sad....

I have 9 rays in my tank, and have come home to dead pup due to bitemarks. Almost half of the babyray was eaten.

Where they eaten completely or just killed off?
Is this sort of thing common?

I ask cause with most of my past fish, if they bred I allow the females to birth in the tank amongst the group(I normally keep single sp. but in group). How does it happen in the wild?

In the wild allot more space to have them with nobody around.
