Hey its better you ask rather than post how you found out!;)

Usually any breeding pair of anything cichlid are pretty mean. Convicts in general are grouchy and if theres something they can pick on? It gets worse. If they actually become a breeding pair they will rule the side of the tank that they laid eggs in.

I would not recommend for you to mix them in with you current stock (as a breeding pair). Only to save everyone from getting nipped or chased and possibly stressed a bit.

Now, you could get a small tank, like a 29g and put 2 small sized male/female Convicts together and let them have at it! You did say that you have never had a cichlid like this!:D

thats pretty much what i thaught thanks

gonna have a shuffle around this summer when i FINALY sort my monster dat/gar/poly/eel tank out so will have a few growouts spare then and may try them in one of those
cheers dave

Even smaller pairs dominate larger fish. the male locks lips, and the female bites eyes. No fish can withstand that abuse. I have had jags breed less belligerently. They even let my Senegal poly in their breeding pot. Not saying you should breed jags in your tank, I'm just saying you should not breed cons either. A single female would look hot.

The problem with convict's is that they are very mean fish espesially the male's!! Convict's need a tank minimum (29 GL) But prefer 40 GL. I agree with orbit. But, Convict's are known to beat up fish larger then they are!!! so I would keep a eye on them!! GOOD LUCK :)

Mine flares up to the glass occasionally if I put my finger up to it. He attacked my red devil who is at least 2.5 times bigger. And doesnt give up, and actually pushes the RD around when they are lip locked. I think he is forming a hump, and stays dark most of the time now.

Id put them in the 20g for now. They wont eat their fry so you dont have to seperate them. I have a breeding pair in with an Oscar and he does fine. They dont seem to be bothered by him too much but I had them in with 5 African Cichlids before and they killed 2 of them.

Convicts are bruisers, especially during mating. I didn't know that the female picks at the eyes lol (kind of disturbing). But yes, I had 2 cons breed in a 55 gallon. They were with 1 more female con and a Jack Dempsey twice their size.
The cons kept the JD Into the opposite corner of the tank.

I hada male kill my Albino Oscar who was slightly larger.

I just got rid of my 5 inch pink con, he was fighting with my 8 inch GT.... just didnt want it to get out of hand. yea but he was a real bad@$$
