How aggressive are Midas in a large tank: over 300 gallons

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 10" Midas in a 265g with a Black Belt, Festae, Grammode, Argentea, Xilo, Bocourti and a Red Isletas and he is 100% fine. All are about 10" except the Grammode, who is about 6". The Midas never messes with anyone... nor does anyone mess with him either. The Black Belt and Grammode are going to be moved soon as they are the trouble makers, lol. The rest get along fine. Good luck.

I had 4 midas at one point in time only one was a jerk and as he grew he settled down. And this wasnt in a big tank. Many amps do well with other amps mine did well with a mix of fish jags oscars dovii catfish. Only time it botherd otger fish was if they botherd it. That being said i have seen midas that are absolute terrors i think it all depends on the age of the fish when you get it. I recomend getting the fish as small as you can and growing it with other fish of non agressive nature.

I have a 300 with a 6-7" Midas, Jd, Freddy and festae. The Midas and Jd are male and the festae and Freddy are female. The Midas runs the tank for the most part but about once every 2-3 weeks he gets beat down pretty good by my jd. Midas wants to mate with the Freddy, but she is already paired up with my Jd.

I think alot depends on the individual fish and tankmates.

My 11" Midas is totally a puppy dog. Never had major issue with him at all. He was raised with other fish since he was little. He is in a 210g. each fish has their own personality and I got a mellow one.

The Midas is a showcase fish.....Grow one mean good looking male alone in 100-125g and you are good.........If not doing the showcase way of having a single fish bein gthe thrill, then grow a few together from 1-3 inch sizes and get a breeding pair.........But dumping a full grown male in a pot of cichlids is not the way to go........My local aquarium in San Francisco had a n exhibit full of full grown Midas in a thousand-something gallon tank..........All the fish were getting along, breeding in their own little territory.........No fights, no scuffles(when I was there).........All the fish had perfect finnage.........The only thing about Midas is the attitude that comes out of them when they pair up and breed..........A single fish is easily trained to get along with its counterparts if grown alongside them since a small size............

how a fish grew up has nothing to do with it imo. i had 2 midas' both males. one was 11" other was 13". the 11" one grew up along side blood parrots, african brown knife, and bala shark in a 135gal. the 13" one grew up in a 75 gal it's whole life. the 11" one attacked every fish i had in my 230 gal community tank while the 13" one was friendly to everyone.

the point i'm trying to say is, when you move a fish from one tank to another, you never know what will happen.
