How Aggressive are Salvini's, Nicaraguans, and Rainbow cichlids in comparison?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Salvini are aggressive little suckers. I have a 4-5" right now in my 240. He's aggressive towards all my geos, electric blue umbee and male jag. The only fish in there's he's not aggressive towards is the female jag, gt and my Datnoid. I will agree out of the fish you listed they are the most aggressive. But when they start getting 4" and over they're color is amazing. Out of all the fish in my 240 he/she has the most color. Stunning.

The colors on them are amazing, which is why I am seriously considering taking the risk and seeing how it plays out and just watch the tank closely. What I dont want to do is jeopardize my other cichlids, especially the EBJD and acara as they were not cheap fish, the EBJD is my favorite and the acara is my girlfriends favorite. Has your salvini actually killed any of those fish? And when you say aggressive, how so? Chase away kind of stuff, lip locking, or seriously fighting?

Salvini are killers, I wouldn't risk a ebjd or acara. My female would've killed my Texas mix had I not moved him. I'd advise against adding a salvini to your final stock

So I searched around yesterday and found salvinis for only $7 and they are perfect size for this tank. Smaller than everyone else, but only by a little bit. The same LFS also had tons of Nics for cheap, like tons, they had 2 tanks full with at least 20 in each tank. He also had some adults that had some really nice colors. The rainbow cichlid now may be the hardest to find. My main LFS has 2 but they are bigger than my severum (who is baout 4 1/2 inches and the biggest right now), which is too big for the tank and they are too mature. Also of the 2 he has, one is getting bullied by the other, so not sure which of the 2 I would take, the aggressive one or the smaller more bullied one.

My girlfriend is against the salvini pretty much, she says it puts the tank at risk. That we could lose the EBJD and Acara (together they were over $70) to a $7 salvini. Not to mention the firemouth, although he was only 87 cents, but I love his colors and personality. I dont want to lose any fish if possible. I appreciate everyones response so far. But has anyone had their salvini murder other cichlids? Or is it more of a chasing aggression. My FM like I said flares up at almost everyone, I imagine he would do it to the salvini as well being of similar size. Is it possible the FM could keep the salvini in check right off the bat? That the salvini being smaller than everyone else, would have to deal with that fact and act accordingly, or would he just take over the tank and kill the severum (#1 in tank)? Other than the FM at 87 cents and the Pictus at $6, nothing in this tank has cost me less than $10. Every cichlid other than the FM has been over $20 (except the chocolates). This is an expensive tank. If salvinis are going to kill everything, would I be safer going with a Nic instead? Or same problems?

PS: Im surprised nobody has said the 7 I have makes this 125g full as can be. I will mention too, that I know of red ceibals but they need 3-4 months of cooler water, which I wont do in the 125 and I am not going to move him in and out twice a year. For his own sake, I will not put him through that. Getting established in this tank alone takes awhile, I am not looking to remove or add fish once its fully established. One last thing, yesterday while looking around I bought a Raphael striped catfish and a bushynose pleco. Both are now in the 125 with everyone else, I will relist my updated stock once more so you dont have to look at the top of this post.

1 Severum, 1 GT, 1 Electric Blue Acara, 1 EBJD, 1 FM. 1 Pictus cat, 1 striped raphael cat, 6 rainbow fish, 1 senegal bichir, 1 bushy nose pleco. Also have 2 chocolate cichilds in a 30gallon QT tank that will be going in once I feel they have been in QT long enough and get a little bigger.

Thanks for this input from experience. I really need like 4 or 5 of these saying 'they are killers and will kill everything their size and smaller' I just find them so amazing looking. Maybe you and my gf and everyone is right though, that the risk is too high and I just shouldnt do it. I know I have said I dont want to add anything once the tank is established. But what if I waited to add a small 3 inch salvini till everyone else was grown out? Think that he would still grow up to kill everyone?

In my experience with firemouths, a salvini will kill a firemouth.

Thanks again for the 2nd response and your attention to my question. That is really what I am most worried about. The acara and EBJD both seem oblivious to everything in the tank, but its the FM who flares up at them and gets them going. He is the one to start it everytime and always the one to back down. I would be worried the salvini would hit the tank, within a day the FM would test him and end up dead.

I will be back on tonight to review more responses and post some of my own again. Thank you everyone who has posted so far.

Let me put it this way convicts can kill ebjd and acara easily. Salvini are just as aggressive if not more so. My father had a male at 4 inches kill a 7 inch Oscar. If you value your ebjd don't do it. Just because it's starting out smaller doesn't mean it won't grow and kill or harass the others

What do you think of or know about the Nicaraguan's and the Rainbow cichlids? Any Idea other than, "better than a salvini," lol.

I have 10 multispinossa growing out in a 60 gal with Aspidorus spilotus, very nice amiable small cichlids, still very young. They come from areas Costa Rica that flood, and they spread out on the floodplain to breed where water temps can range from 50'F to 90'F, eat quite a bit of veggie matter.

Also have half dozen nicaraguense growing out, they are about 3-4" at the moment, housed with some live bearers and dwarf bristle nose plecos.

Neither species have hit adult coloration of yet.

Thats what I am worried abut with the salvini, of the three he would be my first choice, but knowing they are aggressive makes me a little weary on adding him. As long as he cant actually kill everyone I would add him, but I dont want to lose any of my 30-40 dollar fish to a $7 salvini. Good thing is he would alone, no mate, no fry. My FM is a real feisty little guy. He starts it with the acara and EBJD all the time every day. My concern right away with a salvini woud probably be the firemouth. He starts **** with the 2 that he can, the EBJD back him down and has lip locked a few times with him, the acara mostly just backs him down. But its the FM starting it everytime, my concern would be that the FM would start something with the salvini and end up dead. FM was only 87 cents, but of all the cichlids in here, he matured and colored up the fastest making him the prettiest fish in the tank right now. And I kind of like his attitude. He is all bark no bite and funny to watch. I guess Im curious if I got a salvini that was a little smaller than everyone, would I have a better shot at this? I am very tempted to try the salvini and if he shows crazy aggression or I feel he is putting other fish at risk I would remove him and trade him in ASAP.

And as for the Nic you have, when you say holds his own, do you mean he seeks out crap like my FM or he just stands his ground against larger fish, which might be good in a tank where he is surrounded by larger fish.

Oddly enough my severum is #1 right now with the GT in #2

Sorry for the late reply , these guys have pretty much covered the aggression issues with salvini , your current stock there's nothing to match that aggression so I personally wouldn't add a salvini to it everything will get smashed up (there aggression is next level to anything else listed )
As for my nic its in my grow out tank so its been in with some hardy fish such as Cubans , Texas , umbee and dovii and held its own bosses the tank ( these fish have been moved out of that tank at 5-6" though like I said its a grow out tank ) its also got a convict and a tankmate that never tries to fight with it
