I've never kep texas cichlids but now thinking of adding a single show male as a tankmate to bay snook tank. I just need to know if they are as aggressive as people claim them to be. More importantly, is there a chanse it will destroy my snooks? I was actually thinking of getting a male JD initially but all I am seeing around here are females (the fish needs to be at least 4-5" so as not to get eaten). Now the LFS got a batch of texans and I am pretty sure I can pick a male out of the group

The last one i picked up was very aggresive........I put him in my 75 gallon with a couple bichirs, a 4" tiger O, and a 4" Gold Severum........It was extremely aggresive towards the severum and i had to get rid of it.............

IME, anything that even remotely resembles another texas will be shown aggression. I've kept mine with convicts, GT, Jag, and Oscars. The cons got whooped, and the gt would not back down, so there was always a fight waiting to happen. The jag was ok, but they were in a 125, and both only about 5-6 in, so... take that with a grain of salt. The oscars are the only ones that have accepted him, and pay him little attention. I don't know if its because he's a dwarf compared to the oscars or what, but the combo works great. 125g -2 13in +oscars, 1 6in texas cichlid, 1 8in pictus, etc.

I've never kept snooks, so I'm not sure how they would fare. How large is the tank, and how large are the snooks?

Hey-

I Have kept many a Tex in my day. I had a 4" beauty recently in a 125 with a 6" O, a 5" JD, a 5" GT, and 2 Cons (3" M). The cons were instantly sent packing, the GT had to watch his back, as the Tex got him in a Lock and nearly ripped off his lips, the JD was ok as he was not much longer, but huge in the girth, the O just ran the Tex off. Needless to say the Tex eventually went to a friend, (all of these guys did) and he just yesterday took the Tex to the LFS as he was killing the cons, and had the GT Running for his life. Now all is well, but IMHO, I Love the Texas, but they for sure deserve their Rep. I at one time had a Tex/Salvini breed, and summarrly had to remove everything but them from the tank. They are freakin beautiful! But :screwy:.

Texas Cichlids (and apparently so are the Carpinte's, as seen by the photo of the other owner) are extremely aggressive. He will destroy anything else in the tank over time (or in no time) They are also extremely strong - Like that guy said, I've seen many Texas cichlids at LFS's with torn jaws, etc. caused by other Texans. A show male is quite a sight to behold, but you probably want him by himself, or possibly with some VERY DIFFERENT fish such as gars, bichirs, catfish, they tend to leave those alone for the most part, but they will still get nipped around.
Males are easy - the females have black blotches in the dorsal fin. If you decide to get one, get one with lots of pink in the cheeks. Those are the prettiest, IMO.

A JD would be a nice addition with your Snook - They get gorgeous. There is a male being advertised on our MFK classifieds section, in case that interests you.
Meanwhile, depending on how big the ones are that you are seeing, they may still be unsexable.
And hey... why not a female? They are just as gorgeous, IMO.

I Don't have much experience with Snooks, IF He is much bigger (and from what I gather he will be) You could give it a try, But how aggro are the snooks? You guys could answer that......

I just really am a Tex Fan.

In my experience, snooks are like Peacock Bass - Easygoing and not aggressive - maybe a little chasing and territorial behavior, but no "bruising" Not a good match for a Texan, or another agro cichlid.
